Federico
Why did Federico need to improve his English?
Federico had a very specific aim, which was to improve his product sales pitch - both in person, over the phone, and in the form of a follow-up email.
When did he come?
November - for one week - in Bath.
What was his schedule?
Federico did a very intensive course of 6 hours tuition. 4 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon with a tutor who came to his house. In the mornings they worked on Federico's sales pitch and associated documents. In the afternoons they worked on more general English.
We chose Federico's family because they had shared interests - the husband being a keen rugby fan, like Federico. This helped him consolidate his intensive daytime language learning with relaxed conversation in the evenings.
"For me the result is excellent. My teacher, Jane, has helped me create a great presentation and I now feel confident with it. I have also made two very good new friends - my hosts."
Marco
Why did Marco need to improve his English?
Marco had finished an architecture degree but had not got a job yet. He believed that it would be a good idea to improve his English and gain some relevant work experience.
When did he come?
August - for four weeks
What was his schedule?
Marco did 4 hours formal 1:1 English tuition every morning with a tutor who came to his house. He did 3 hours work experience in a Winchester architect's office every afternoon. He lived with a friendly, educated English couple who took the time to chat to him over the evening meal so that he reinforced his English learning in the most natural way. (The English hosts we chose for Marco are a photographer and an architectural technician so they had lots of interests in common.)
"This sort of programme is the very best way to improve your English. I only speak English at home and at the office and in my lessons. My English host family is great and the office is friendly. I am very happy with my progress."
Liese
Why did Liese need to improve her English?
To improve her English for school exams and for her future propects.
When did she come?
July - for three weeks. Her friend Sofie came for the same dates but stayed with a different English family. Liese was reluctant to come on her own, so this arrangement was ideal because it did not undermine her English learning.
What was her schedule?
Liese did 3 hours formal 2:1 English tuition every morning with a tutor who came to her house. She shared her lessons with her friend, Sofie. Her friend Sofie stayed with a different family. The girls met up for lessons but spent the rest of the time apart, so that they spoke only English during their stay. We chose Liese's family because they have a girl her age and similar interests: liking the outdoors, running and swimming, as Liese does.
"I think all students should stay with an English family and not in a group. It is the best method. My family is lovely and my teacher is good. Now I am thinking in English. I hope to come back and stay with the Wilsons again next year."
