If you are staying with a host family, they may take you on some visits, but these will probably be restricted to the local area. If you want to go further afield for a real “day out” with a guide, why not book an accompanied excursion? Discover beautiful and fascinating places, while chatting in English…

Notes:

Excursions by train – these will usually depart after 1000, to take advantage of cheaper “off-peak” rail fares

Ask your host family to prepare you a packed lunch if you want to save on extra expenses!

From Winchester

London by train (full-day)

You can spend the day as you choose, visiting Galleries, walking along the Thames, shopping, seeing the famous sights such as Buckingham Palace, The Palace of Westminster/Big Ben… or a combination. It’s up to you!

You will normally depart after 1000 and return mid-evening.


Oxford by train (full-day)

Oxford is just one hour on the train from Winchester, direct. This city of “dreaming spires” is one of the most famous university cities in the world and the university itself, made up of separate Colleges, each with its own character, is legendary. Visit some Colleges and drink in the very special atmosphere.

Portsmouth by car, to include the South Downs (full-day)

Portsmouth is on the coast, to the east of Southampton. It is an historic port, and now hosts a fascinating naval dockyard. You will drive there through the South Downs National Park, a beautiful area of rolling hills and stunning countryside.


Salisbury and Stonehenge by car (full-day)

Stonehenge, the legendary ancient monument composed of huge stones, is of great interest to those who love ancient history, mystery and science. Visit this world attraction at your leisure before moving on to the attractive city of Salisbury, with its miraculous Cathedral and Chapter House and lively shopping area.

Villages and rivers of Hampshire by car (half-day)

Hampshire is famous for its beautiful rivers and pretty villages. Tour around, stopping to visit fascinating old churches and contemplate the calm river scene. Stop for tea or coffee and cakes.
